| Put yourself into your user's shoes before planning
your site's content. Why would they come to your site and what can
you do to make sure their visit is rewarded? Ask yourself some basic
questions. What is the goal of my site? Am I aiming it toward gallery
owners as a presentation package? Is this an e-commerce site to sell
paintings on the web? What will the viewer be looking for and how can
I make it easier for them to find? Write a mission statement and stick
to it. A good website requires forethought.
In order to be listed in most search engines the first page requires some special formatting and use of text relating to search terms. This precludes the use of flash splash pages and image based design. I like to be able to link to any section of the site from any page on the site and It's important to have access to the most commonly sought after information right away. There are two basic aspects to a website. The actual site pages, and the domain name. The pages, images, music, and any other digital data resides on a server at the web hosting company. It is denoted by a number you will probably never see. The domain name is like a shortcut to the website. You virtually holler out this nickname and the site responds. Pick a domain name. Something easy to remember, type, and spell. Think of it as your nickname on the web. I want it to be as easy as possible for someone I meet to find my site so if I can say "go to joeart.com' it's hard for them to forget or misspell, but if i say "go to JoePhillpotArtAbstractOnline.com" They may misspell, or if they are like me not even go 'cause it's too much to type in. remember this will only be part of your email address so picture The domain name is a separate charge but it is best purchased at the time you get the server cause they hook it up or point it to the server with a minimum of fuss. That cost runs about $20 a year. I would get at least three years up front. I want my website available 24 hours a day, and since I don't leave my computer on for that length of time, or have a super fast connection I use a web hosting company. For $7.95 a month they rent me space on their server and then my website is available and anyone on the web can access it easily any time they want. Web hosting companies such as Ipowerweb (the company I use) have buildings filled with these servers and backup servers located elsewhere in the event of power failure. if you buy a year up front they charge no set up fee free domain registration and $7.95 a month and allow you to run 400 email names through the website using your domain name (i.e., joe@joeartist.com). Sign up through my website and I'll get credit, Forward me the info on password and username and I can set up the files. I can scan your slides for the web or accept a burned disc or even emailed files. If you have digital files ready to email or burn to disc make sure they are tiff or pict files not jpeg and that they are at least 600 pixels longest side. Any text I ask that you type in to the computer as a word proccessing document or even in an email and email or attach it to me. This saves you money as I won't be charging you $50 per hour to type up your text. I charge $50 an hour. If your slides are good and already digitized
I can usually complete the site in ten hours. Two hours or so back
and forth tuning it up and you get a custom website with 20 -40 images,
CV, news page and even a guestbook for about $500 $0 initial server set up fee (12 month package) sign up here
If you have a burned CD (or zip disc) please prepare a list with medium and sizes next to the name of the image like this. Then email it to me. Fugue # 1 19"x50" Silk. Hand pieced, hand quilted. Price:
